چکیده
10.1 The Chi-square Goodness of Fit Test. The general area of nonparametric statistical inference deals with statistical procedures such as hypothesis testing, point estimation and confidence intervals in problems where the parent distribution has no known functional form. For one reason or another, the chi-square goodness of fit test is considered to be in this area, and so we present it here. There are many chi-square tests, and what we present here is perhaps a primitive one.

8.1 The General Linear Model and Least Squares. Parametric statistical inference deals in very large part with the general linear model, to which this chapter is devoted. In this section we shall lay out its definition, then we shall define the least squares problem for the unknown parameters of interest and present its solution, and we shall give a few introductory examples of the model. The d...

7.1 Densities of Functions of Random Variables. In this chapter we shall gather together some techniques in obtaining densities of functions of random variables with the aim of nding the densities of the standard distributions used in parametric statistical inference. Our rst aim here is to de ne the t-distribution, the chi-square distribution and the F -distribution, which are all related to...

4.1 Statistical Inference Involving Historical Data. This is a tale of two experimental scientists, one wise and one foolish. Both are working independently on a new treatment for a certain ailment. There already is a treatment for this ailment, and it has been in use for a long time. According to the records, this treatment is not too bad, but it should be improved upon. According to historica...
متن کاملSOME THEORY AND PRACTICE OF STATISTICS by Howard G. Tucker Chapter 6. Statistical Inference Involving Discrete Distributions
6.1 A Basic Statistical Method in Hypothesis Testing. In chapter 4 we encountered our rst problems in statistical inference. One dealt with the problem of sample size. The other was a problem of a statistical test of hypothesis. It dealt with the problem of whether two samples arose from the same distribution function or whether there was a shift and essentially a di¤erence in means between th...
متن کاملChapter 4 : Generating Random Variables
Many of the methods in computational statistics require the ability to generate random variables from known probability distributions. This is at the heart of Monte Carlo simulation for statistical inference (Chapter 6), bootstrap and resampling methods (Chapters 6 and 7), Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques (Chapter 11), and the analysis of spatial point processes (Chapter 12). In addition, we...
